Naples has become a surprisingly good city for sushi.
Whether you're looking for a casual neighborhood restaurant, an elaborate specialty roll, beautifully prepared sashimi, or a more refined Japanese dining experience, there are plenty of options around town.
And, just like Italian restaurants, steakhouses and coffee shops, everyone seems to have their place.
I certainly do.
Actually, I have five.
As with the other articles in this series, this isn't meant to be a definitive ranking of the "best sushi restaurants in Naples." Food is personal, and what I love about these lists is that they reflect the places I genuinely enjoy going back to.
These are simply my five favorite places for sushi in Naples, each offering something a little different.
And we're starting on the East Trail.
1. Saki Japanese Kitchen II
4903 Tamiami Trail E., Naples
Saki Japanese Kitchen II takes the number-one spot on my list.
Located on the East Trail near Rattlesnake Hammock Road, this is exactly the kind of restaurant I love discovering in Naples.
It isn't surrounded by luxury boutiques or sitting in the middle of one of our major dining districts. It's simply a comfortable neighborhood Japanese restaurant that consistently gives me what I'm looking for when I'm craving sushi.
And sometimes that's exactly the point.
The menu goes well beyond sushi, with sashimi, hibachi, teriyaki, bento boxes and Japanese appetizers, so it's also an easy choice when everyone at the table isn't necessarily in the mood for the same thing.
What keeps bringing me back, though, is the sushi.
I appreciate restaurants where freshness and consistency matter more than theatrics, and Saki has become one of those dependable places for me.
It's relaxed.
It's approachable.
And it doesn't need to be a special occasion.
Sometimes you just want really good sushi without turning dinner into an event.
For me, this is that place.
2. LoLa 41
560 9th Street S., Naples
LoLa 41 takes sushi in a completely different direction.
Located just off Fifth Avenue South, LoLa 41 is a global bistro and sushi bar built around the idea of exploring cuisines from destinations located along the 41st parallel. Its menu blends sushi and sashimi with dishes inspired by culinary traditions from around the world.
It's one of the more polished restaurants on this list, and the atmosphere is part of the appeal.
This is where I might go when I want sushi but also want the evening itself to feel a little more elevated.
You can order beautifully prepared sushi, sashimi and specialty rolls, but someone at the table who isn't interested in sushi still has plenty of choices. That's one of the things I like about it.
LoLa 41 also brings a downtown Naples energy to the experience.
You're close to Fifth Avenue.
The restaurant has a stylish atmosphere.
The cocktails matter almost as much as the food.
And dinner can easily become the first stop of a longer evening downtown.
It's sushi, but with a little Naples nightlife attached.
3. Sushi Sake Naples
11180 Tamiami Trail N., Naples
Sushi Sake brings another completely different personality to the list.
The concept originated on Florida's east coast and has expanded into Naples, bringing an energetic, modern sushi restaurant to North Naples. The Naples location serves sushi, sashimi, specialty rolls and a broader Japanese-inspired menu.
This isn't a quiet little sushi counter.
There's more energy here.
The menu is extensive, the specialty rolls can get creative, and the restaurant stays open later than many sushi restaurants in Naples, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights.
That's actually one of the things that makes it useful.
Naples has plenty of wonderful restaurants, but we're not exactly famous for being a late-night dining city.
So having a place where you can get sushi later in the evening gives Sushi Sake a niche of its own.
It's fun, modern and a little more energetic than some of the other places on my list.
4. Mimoto
71 9th Street S., Naples
Mimoto is one of the newer additions to the Naples sushi scene, and it brings a more refined, contemporary approach to Japanese dining.
Located just blocks from downtown, Mimoto describes itself around the identity of Japanese cuisine, with sushi, sake and carefully composed dishes at the center of the experience.
The atmosphere is more intimate and minimalist than some of the larger restaurants on this list.
And the menu reflects that same philosophy.
You'll find nigiri, sashimi, rolls and more creative combinations, including dishes that incorporate ingredients such as hamachi, eel, ikura and torched fish.
This is one of the places I'd choose when I want the food itself to be the focus of the evening.
It's less about giant specialty rolls and more about the details.
Presentation.
Ingredients.
Balance.
Technique.
Mimoto represents another sign of how much the Naples dining scene continues to evolve.
We aren't simply getting more restaurants.
We're getting increasingly specialized ones.
And that's good news for anyone who loves sushi.
5. Namba Ramen & Sushi
8847 Tamiami Trail N., Naples
Rounding out my five is Namba.
And Namba is another restaurant that isn't solely about sushi.
The restaurant draws inspiration from the Japanese izakaya style of dining, where small plates are shared around the table alongside drinks and conversation. The name itself comes from Namba, the lively district of Osaka known for its dining and entertainment scene.
That philosophy makes Namba particularly fun when you're dining with other people.
You don't necessarily have to order one entrée and call it a night.
Order sushi.
Try a small plate.
Add some gyoza.
Maybe ramen.
Then order something else because the table next to you got something that looked interesting.
That's part of the experience.
Their menu includes maki rolls, nigiri, sashimi, aburi sushi, ramen and Japanese small plates, giving you plenty of ways to build a meal.
I like restaurants that encourage you to explore a little, and Namba does exactly that.
You might walk in craving sushi and leave thinking about the ramen.
That's not a bad problem to have.
Five Sushi Restaurants, Five Very Different Experiences
That's becoming my favorite part of putting these lists together.
You start with five restaurants that technically belong in the same category, and then realize how little alike they actually are.
At Saki Japanese Kitchen II, I get the comfortable neighborhood sushi experience that keeps me coming back.
At LoLa 41, sushi becomes part of a sophisticated downtown Naples evening.
At Sushi Sake, there's more energy, creative rolls and a later-night atmosphere.
At Mimoto, the experience becomes more intimate, precise and focused on Japanese technique.
And at Namba, sushi is only part of a larger Japanese izakaya-style experience where sharing and exploring the menu is half the fun.
Five restaurants.
Five personalities.
One very good excuse to eat more sushi.
That's also one of the things I'm enjoying about this restaurant series.
Real estate might be what I do for a living, but living in Naples is about much more than houses.
It's finding the coffee shop where you become a regular.
The Italian restaurant where you already know what you're ordering.
The steakhouse you recommend when friends come into town.
And the sushi place you suddenly start craving at 4:00 in the afternoon.
Those places eventually become part of your Naples routine.
